Ferry hits boat in Sydney harbour

Ferry hits boat in Sydney harbour

Sydney - A passenger ferry ploughed into a pleasure boat under Sydney's iconic Harbour Bridge, killing at least three people, including two professional figure skating judges, and injuring eight others, officials said on Thursday.

The ferry shattered the 10-metre-long wooden cruiser and pitched its passengers into the water in the collision, which occurred about 22:45 on Wednesday, witnesses and police said.

Most of the 12 passengers on board the smaller boat were members of Australia's ice skating community, in Sydney to participate in a weeklong seminar by US figure skating coach, Kathy Casey.

Australian figure skating judges Alan Blinn and Simone Moore, both of whom worked at international events, were killed, according to Michael Pasfield, vice-president of the Australian Professional Skating Association. The identity of a third victim was not immediately released.

Police divers were also searching for 14-year-old Queensland state skater Morgan Innes, who was thrown from the pleasure cruiser and is feared dead, Pasfield and police said.

Former Australian Olympic figure skater Liz Cain, who competed for Australia at the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York, had a leg partially amputated in the accident. Seven other people were also injured, skating officials and police said.

Boat 'just disintegrated'

"The boat basically just disintegrated," said witness Clive Marshall, who was on another ferry passing nearby. "There were a couple of people hanging onto the wreckage. We had people in the water and bits of boat and the boat sinking and people screaming for their missing friends."

Ferry crew leaped into the water to help the victims, and a police rescue helicopter used a spotlight to help locate the injured.

The ferry was returning to its berth at the time of the crash.

Dozens of ferries and hundreds of other boats ply Sydney harbour every day, including navy vessels, cruise liners and container ships, and collisions occur periodically, occasionally causing deaths.

The deadliest crash was in 1927, when a mail steamer collided with a ferry, sinking the ferry and killing 40 people.

Outbound Yachts / Kernan Yacht Design
With its powerful sailplan and raised saloon, the Outbound 52 promises to be speedy, comfortable and fun to sail.

Outbound Yachts has a 52-footer in the works. Due to be launched this summer, it's a Tim Kernan designed, center-cockpit, fast cruising cutter. Preliminary drawings reveal a moderate displacement hull with a large, bulbed fin keel and a spade rudder. The big, 15/16 fractional, triple-spreader rig will get most of its drive from the mainsail. No doubt, electric winches will make it possible for a couple to handle the boat with ease.

The slightly raised saloon will make the companionway shorter for ease of movement, and diners will enjoy a bright, airy midships social area. The aft cabin is large, with plenty of storage and a private head with walk-in shower. The galley occupies the passageway to port and looks like it will be easy to work. The engine room is in the center of the boat under the cockpit, and is accessed from a small cabin to starboard that has an area labeled workbench or pilot berth. (I know which option I'd choose.)

Three different cabin layouts are offered forward. Each features a good-sized head and shower. The option I like best has an offset double along the port side, with an office or stateroom immediately aft to port; one layout has a pretty basic-looking V-berth with the same cabin arrangement aft; the last dispenses with the extra cabin but has a centerline double berth in a large stateroom that looks like it'll rival the aft cabin for comfort.

Bottom line: the Outbound 52 looks like the kind of boat I prefer to take offshore-- speedy, comfortable and fun to sail.

Massive boat fire in League City caught on camera

Massive boat fire in League City caught on camera

Four people taken to area hospitals
By Stephanie Guadian
(3/26/07 - KTRK/LEAGUE CITY, TX) - We have exclusive video of an explosion at a marina in League City that sent four people to area hospitals. The fire started on one boat, but quickly spread to others on a day when a lot of people were out on the water.

Four people were onboard the boat when it exploded into flames at the South Shore Marina in Clear Lake.

"I said, 'Oh dear.' As soon as I saw the smoke, I knew it was a gasoline fire," said witness Al Wetterstroem.

Wetterstroem watched as the fire spread from one to three boats. Kamil Mortada was also at the marina. He grabbed his fire extinguisher and tried unsuccessfully to put out the flames.

"I saw two guys," said Mortada. "One was in the water. The other guy out in the pier, badly burned."

In all, four people were injured. Two people had severe burns. A 34-year-old and a 17-year-old were taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hosptial. The other two were taken by ambulance to St Johns.

At one point, the Coast Guard began towing boats out so they would not burn. Mortada couldn't put out the flames, but he was able to pull one man to safety.

"Big puff of smoke, black smoke," he said. "I ran like crazy trying to help these people."

While an investigation into what started the fire continues, Coast Guard officials believe one boat was fueling when some of the fuel leaked into an unsafe area.

Capsized boat recovered, third man still missing at Lake Henshaw

Capsized boat recovered, third man still missing at Lake Henshaw

By: North County Times

LAKE HENSHAW ---- A Sheriff's Department dive team looking for the body of a fisherman instead found the aluminum boat that capsized killing three men on Lake Henshaw, authorities said Saturday.

The small boat capsized about 3:30 p.m. Thursday during a thunderstorm that included lightening and gusty winds.

The boat was blown to one side of the lake, sheriff's Lt. Mike Barletta said in a written news statement. Sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said it did not appear the vessel had been struck by lightning.

Two bodies were recovered, and the team was continuing its search for the third man today.

One man, Thomas Meridieth, 63, of Glendora, was pulled from the water soon after the boat capsized, but died on scene despite efforts to revive him, Barletta said.

The body of a second man, a 58-year-old Pasadena resident, was found by the dive team Friday. His name has not been released pending the notification of his family.

Barletta said the accident happened after a fisherman in a boat offered a ride to three fisherman walking along the shore so they would avoid the coming storm. Two of the men accepted and another kept walking.

The fisherman on shore suddenly noticed the capsized boat and saw one of the fisherman face down floating to the other side of the lake, Barletta said. He ran to get the man out of the water and then went for help.

The boat and the Bay

The boat and the Bay

Bill Scholle

Published 03/23/2007 - 4:12 p.m.

If you have been faithfully following these bi-weekly columns (and who hasn’t?), you know by now about our boating experiences in and around (and aground) our waterways. You know, for example, that other boaters feel that we are somewhat inept at docking, steering, line-tying, line removal, communicating with others, navigating and generally knowing what we are doing in a boat. Other than that, we are pretty good.

We have enjoyed belonging to the Discovery Bay Yacht Club and taking an occasional Club trip to the Sacramento Jazz Festival and Pier 40 in San Francisco. Occasionally we have stopped overnight in, say, Vallejo or Martinez. But that was just to bump into things. Some of our best friends have been sorely challenged to keep us from sinking or getting lost. Fortunately, people like the Tom Devoes and the Dick Jamisons and many others have managed to keep us dry and our friendship has endured. Barely.

The other day we thought that, maybe, the problem was that our boat was either too big or not big enough. We thought that, maybe, we need a different boat. So we went to see our friend Matt, who owns Pacific Boat Center there on Bethel Island. We found that Matt is still the same wonderful guy he was when we re-financed our house so that we could buy our first boat. Same smile. Same engaging attitude. Same jokes.

So we said, “Matt, we have this fine boat that we bought from you just three years ago and it has very low hours (that seems to be somewhat important) and it still looks brand new. What will you give us for it if we buy another boat from you?”

“About half.”

“About half what?”

“What you paid for it.”

Well, that sounded fair enough to me and so we looked around some and spotted this new one. It’s smaller than the old one and it looks like you couldn’t get into much trouble with it. It looks like it could get us pretty much anywhere we wanted to go. We weren’t thinking City anymore ‘cause that’s too dangerous and, besides, our few remaining friends said that if we went there … they wouldn’t. Sorta’ put a damper on the idea.

Anyway, you want to know if we fell for Matt’s tricks again, huh?

Sure.

We called the finance guy the next day and he, too, was just as happy to hear from us this time as he was last time and, “of course … there are some great loans available for the next two days only …”

He came over and were we ever lucky … said that we got the last one.

Now, when the new boat arrives we will be all set. We can go anywhere on the Delta. Maybe even further. Can go down to the new Elks Club there in Pittsburg and up to Paradise Cove out of Stockton or one of the other places that they show on the map you get when you buy the boat. When you buy the boat, you get the map free. How can you pass that up?

Then after we ordered the new boat we headed over to the Pleasanton Boat Show. That’s a big mistake. Person should never go to a boat show. But know what’s good? The new Sea Doos will arrive about the same time as the new boat.

Won’t that be great!

So then, yep, you guessed it: we will be able to go to all these places in boat or on Jet Ski!

… assuming that we learn to do that steering, docking and line stuff …

If you should see a couple of old people flying by on the water (hair disheveled, eyes filled with fear with an expression of sheer shock), don’t be alarmed. It’s just us on our way to Sunday Brunch.

One dead, three hurt in boat crash on the Sunshine Coast

One dead, three hurt in boat crash on the Sunshine Coast

Published: Thursday, March 22, 2007
One person is dead and three are hurt after their boat ran aground at high speed.

The crash happened shortly after midnight about 80 miles north of Vancouver at Deserted Bay on the Sunshine Coast.

The coast guard did attend, but due to darkness and poor weather, they could not get the injured out until this morning.

The boat was a ferry from a logging camp that was aiding in another rescue after a call went out that someone had fallen overboard on another boat.

That person was believed to be rescued, and the logging camp boat was heading back to its berth when the crash happened.

Coast Guard official said it may have been snowing or heavy sleet may have been falling at the time of the crash, which they say happened at what looks like high speed.

No names have been released and RCMP are on scene investigating.

Injuries of the other three range from "minor" to "serious".

They were taken to Sea Island in Richmond by Coast Guard hovercraft and are being transported to hospital.

Dubai International Boat Show 2007 closes with exhibitors enjoying record sales of US$148 million

Dubai International Boat Show 2007 closes with exhibitors enjoying record sales of US$148 million

Posted: 22-03-2007 , 13:52 GMT

Organisers and exhibitors have all reported record-breaking results that make this year’s Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS) 2007 the most successful edition in its history.

Despite blustery conditions for the final days, nearly 25,000 visitors passed through the exhibition gates over the five-day event, in which 330 boats were on show, with several of the exhibitors selling their entire range of display vessels and many others taking a wealth of advance orders.

Reports from exhibitors suggest that a total of US$148 million worth of boats, yachts, boating equipment and services were sold during the show.

Helal Saeed Al Marri, Director General of Dubai World Trade Centre, organiser of Dubai International Boat Show, said: “Whenever I talk to exhibitors and visitors at DIBS, they comment that it’s a great place to do business, particularly since it attracts so many people from across the region who are actively looking to make a deal. The early indications are that this year’s exhibition has exceeded our expectations, driving sales past last year’s recorded-breaking numbers.”

UAE-based ART Marine displayed US$66 million worth of yachts, and at the close of the show announced that it recorded sales and advance orders for all of the yachts on display. The group, which was the largest exhibitor at the show with 27 yachts, now has customers waiting for the next line.

ART Marine’s biggest success was the sale of the new flagship Azimut 103S Yacht within a day of its international launch at DIBS 2007. The advanced luxury yacht found a buyer shortly after the opening of the show, with strong competition for the chance to be the first in the world to own the high-end craft.

Other dealers also saw strong sales and major business opportunities. Emirates Yachting, the exclusive dealer of Bayliner and Trophy sports fishing boats in the UAE, sold 12 boats during the event, which included six of the ever-popular Bayliner 175 yachts.

Andy Sixsmith of Emirates Yachting, commented: “This is the second time that we have exhibited at the Dubai International Boat Show and once again we have enjoyed overwhelming sales. We have sold 12 boats and have orders for at least another 10 sales following the show.”

Dubai-based Macky Marine was exhibiting 10 boats on its stand, including the Formula 40 and new Monterey 330 Cruiser, making a number of sales and key contacts.

ASIS, a manufacturer of fibreglass rigid inflatable boats, successfully sold five of its six boats on display, and received orders for a further ten, closing sales of over Dhs. 1 million within three days. First Marine, which started the event with 11 boats in the 20 foot range on its stand, sold nine with a combined value of over Dhs. 2 million.

Many of the exhibitors at national pavilions enjoyed an extremely successful show including the impressive British Marine Federation (BMF) pavilion, HISWA Holland Yachting Group and the German Boat Builders Association which were all present in the Luxury Supplies and Services area.

The DIBS Equipment, Supplies and Services Area enjoyed strong international representation with the UK’s the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce exhibiting along with the Italian Trade Commission, New Zealand Marine Export Group and UBIFRANCE.

New innovations at DIBS have also generated strong returns. The decision to hold the Dive Middle East Exhibition (DMEX) alongside DIBS 2007 has boosted regional interest in the sport, according to diving enthusiasts.

“The show was a great success, with the live demonstrations proving particularly popular, as well as the lessons on discovery scuba, free diving and underwater communication. Interest in diving is growing in the Middle East, both on the part of international visitors and for people who live here, so the dialogue generated by this exhibition is hugely productive,” said Ibrahim N. Al Zu’bi, Advisor to Emirates Diving Association.

Perhaps most importantly, this year’s event has demonstrated to a global audience the major potential of the region’s Gulf leisure marine industry, with international industry commentators predicting a glowing future, particularly as the current construction boom in marinas and waterfront property creates additional berths for yachts and leisure craft.

To recognise the important contribution that major developments are making to support the expansion of the marine industry in the region, Dubai World Trade Centre held a special ceremony to honour Gold Sponsor Dubai Maritime City, which will be the largest and the most comprehensive maritime complex in the world.

Helal Saeed Al Marri presented a special award to Amer Ali, CEO, Dubai Maritime City, in recognition of the group’s ongoing support.

The 2008 Dubai International Boat Show will take place from 12 – 16 March at the Dubai International Marine Club.
